The Study of the Health-Promoting Behavior for the Elderly

Abstract
This study was undertaken to grasp health-promoting behavior of the elderly and to identify self-rating health status, demographic characteristics related to them in order to facilitate nursing intervention for health promotion of this population. The subjects for this study were 225 old persons visiting five general social welfare centers located in Tague.
Data were collected by self-reported questionnaires from September 20 to October 15, 1996. Questionnaires were Northern Illinois University¢¥s Health Self-Rating Scale, Walker and others¢¥ Health Promotion Lifestyles Profile. Analysis of the data was done by the SAS program for descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson Correlation Coefficient.
The results were summarized as follows:
1. There were significant differences in health-promoting behavior according to sex(t= 3.29, p=.0012), marital status(F=8.99, p=.0002), education(F=4.67, p=.0013), people living together(F=4.02, p=.0194), previous occupation(F=3.28, p=.0026), and average monthly pocket money(F=4.98, p=.0008).
2. For the participation in health-promoting behavior, the mean score was 2.95 and range was from 3.57 to 2.16. The factors of high mean score were sedentary life(3.41), regular diet(3.38), and factors of low mean score were stress management(2.35), accountability for health(2.61).
3. The mean score of health self-rating was 8.70(range 4--14) and was considered low.
4. Self-rating health status was correlated positively with health-promoting behavior (r=.1784, p=.0107)
On the basis of the above findings, the followings are recommended ;
1. Nursing strategies need to be developed considering personal demographic characteristics of the elderly.
2. Nursing intervensions enhancing self-actualization, accountability for health, stress management of the erderly must be provided.
